Goats!

You remember Edie and Alobar, right?

And you remember our fence party, right?

Well, we finally got the fence all finished and the “new” goat housing done over Memorial Day weekend.

I say “new” because the structure is not new at all. Those of you familiar with the farm will remember it as Grandpa’s truck garage. I don’t have a total before picture but here is one right after Mike modified the structure and right before I started cleaning it out.

photo 1It was pretty dirty. I tied a bandana over my face and armed myself with a snow shovel and an old broom and got to work. I hauled out two cartloads of dirt, mold, weird old parts, rotten drywall, black walnut shells, and lots of random dirty old stuff.

While I was cleaning Mike got the gate up with a little help from his dad who stopped over at just the right time.

photo 2Once it was all cleaned out we got their food and water sources installed and Mike laid down some bedding – a base of large wood chips topped with some straw.

While all this work was going on I turned the chickens loose in the old goat house. They’ll scratch and peck in there for a few days and it will make my clean out job a heck of a lot easier. Nice work birds!

photo 15After the work was done we headed back to the fenced in pasture to show the goats all around their new turf and encourage them to start eating (the grass is very tall).

We took a break and made out in the tall grass. Ha!
